The Swiss Super League is not on of Europe's biggest, richest, most successful football league. At a matter of fact, the Swiss league ranks only 16th on UEFA's ranking for the 2024-25 season. Even though, it is a league where the football quality is very high, its stadiums, in accordance with Swiss standards, are very nicely-groomed and fans-welcoming, and its leading players often play in Europe's biggest leagues.
The Swiss league was established in 1897, yet it began playing league matches only a year later. The league went through a series of changes, including number of playing clubs. The Super league format as it stands today, came into effect at the start of the 2003-04 season. The last change came to effect before the 2023-24 season, where the number of clubs rose from 10 to 12. League matches stand at 36, as each club play the other four time per season.
In accordance with its financial standing, the Swiss Super League do not boost of enormous stadiums. The largest stadium is FC Basel's St. Jakob-Park, with a capacity of 37,994 spectators. The smallest stadium is FC Lugano's Cornaredo Stadium, with capacity of 6,390 spectators.
Grasshopper holds the record for championships, with 27 titles, 19 in the professional area. Second is Basel, with 20 titles, 18 in the professional area. Servette has won 17 championships, like Young Boys (the reigning champion), and Zürich has won 13 Swiss Titles. In all, Basel was the dominant force in swiss football since the establishment of the Super League, with 11 titles, an unprecedent run of 8 consecutive titles between 2009-2016. Then came Young Boys, which have won the championship between 2017-2023-24 in a row.
Peter Risi is the Swiss Super League all-time top goal scorer, with 197 goals. Second is Fritz Künzli with 194 goals and third is Eugen Meier with 181.
The league's all-time appearance leader is Karl Grob with 511 matches played. He is followed by Philippe Perret, who has also played 511 times, and Heinz Hermann with 495 matches played.
