Adele is probably the greatest contemporary sensation in the ever changing world of popular music. Born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins on May 5th 1988, she attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology.
She received enormous praise from the critics for the first two albums she produced, 19 and 21. 19 was a great success, entering the album charts at No 1 in the United Kingdom and reaching No 4 in Billboard in the USA. Apparently the reason that the album was called “19” was to reflect her age when writing it – because most of the songs were her own compositions. The album received four or five star reviews from most music critics. The Observer for example commented "The way she stretched the vowels, her wonderful soulful phrasing, the sheer unadulterated pleasure of her voice, stood out all the more;”,
Two years later, her similarly named follow up album “21” shares the folk and Motown influences of the first album but adds the inspiration that Adele received from American country and Southern blues. The main part of the album was recorded after her breakup from a relationship which shows up in the downbeat nature of some of the material.
It would be an understatement to say that the reception and the sales impact of this second album was sensational. “21” topped the charts literally all over the globe, it was the best-selling album of the 21st century in the UK and no female singer has ever achieved a 23 week stay at the top of the charts before.
The next highlight in her fast rising career was an invitation to write the theme song for the James Bond movie for which she received an Oscar for song-writing. She has also won both Grammy and Golden Globe awards.
Her latest album “25” released in November 2015 contrasted with its predecessor in that Adele described it as a “make up” album as opposed to a “break-up” album. It is a collection of quite sad and emotional songs reflecting the nature of relationships, in many ways quite a traditional “pop” album.
Yet again the sales figures are quite mind blowing: in no fewer than 110 countries it reached No 1 on ITunes.
Sales in the USA within seven days of the album’s release were a record breaking 3.38 million copies.
In the UK a million copies were sold within ten days – yet another commercial record.
Adele differs from other British female singers such as Lily Allen and the late Amy Winehouse in that her influences include singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and her appearance is more solid and less angular. She has an amazing appeal to audiences – on her recent Saturday night at Glastonbury she seemed to have the whole audience in her hand.
