Hakkında Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan who compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league's National Football Conference (NFC) North division. The team plays its home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit.
Originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team formally joined the NFL on July 12, 1930 and began play in the 1930 season. Despite success within the NFL, they could not survive in Portsmouth, then the NFL's smallest city. The team was purchased and moved to Detroit for the 1934 season.
Radio executive George A. Richards was responsible for purchasing and moving the Portsmouth Spartans to Detroit in 1934 and renaming the team the Lions. The nickname was likely derived from Detroit’s established baseball team, the Tigers, who won 101 games and the AL pennant that year. As the team explained it, “The lion is the monarch of the jungle, and we hope to be the monarch of the league.” However some things don’t work out as planned…
The Lions have won four NFL championships, tied for 9th overall in total championships amongst all 32 NFL franchises however, their last was in 1957, which gives the club the second-longest NFL championship drought behind the Arizona Cardinals. They are one of four current teams, and the only NFC team, to have not yet played in the Super Bowl.
However as one of their fans wrote “the Detroit Lions have lacked their fair share of success over the years, especially for a team that has been around for more than 75 of them. Still, running contrary to that history of failure is the number of highly-respected icons the team has seen over time. The Lions don't lead the league in Hall-of-Famers, Pro Bowl appearances, or any other metric by which you would measure the best individual performers in history. But the guys that the Lions do have as team icons are beloved as much or more as any player on any team in any sport.” Let’s meet just a few of them….
Running back Barry Sanders spent his entire career with the Detroit Lions. A member of both the college and professional football halls of fame, he was ranked by NFL Top 10 as the most elusive runner in NFL history and also topped their list of greatest players never to reach the Super Bowl. Averaging over 1,500 rushing yards per season, Sanders left the game just 1,457 yards short of breaking the NFL all-time rushing record at the time.
Joe Schmidt spent thirteen years with the Lions (1953-65) and gained a place in the football Hall of Fame. He then spent a further period as the team’s coach.
Bobby Layne is another Hall of Famer and the greatest quarterback in Lions history and was responsible for helping the Lions towards championships.
Lem Barney was the first of the greats to wear No. 20 for the Detroit Lions, and in some circles, he's still considered the best. Barney was a shutdown corner who led the NFL in interceptions his rookie year, but was also highly proficient as a kick returner. He is among the Lions' all-time leaders in both areas. Between his kick returns and defensive scores, Barney scored 11 touchdowns in his 11-year career.
