It all started as an idea. Or as an ad campaign. Or a publicity stunt, even though its meaning was serious. Dead serious. The end result was not only the biggest football club to be in Switzerland, but also the biggest club in world of football. And both of those clubs play in red and blue.
In November 1893 an ad was placed in a newspaper in Basel, calling for the establishment of a new football club. 11 people turned out for the first meeting and FC Basel 1893 was formed. It turned out that one of the first club captains was a fellow by the name of Hans Max Gamper-Haessig, who had previously played for Zurich. In a few years, Gamper would travel to visit a relative in Barcelona, add Joan to his first name, and in 1899 would put an ad in a local paper calling for the establishment of a new football team. The rest is history.
But let’s go back to Basel. First trophy came in 1933 in the form of the Swiss Cup, after a win over the side that would become Basel’s archrivals – Grasshoper. First league title came 20 years later, after the 1952-53 season. Until 1979-80, Basel had won a total of eight league titles and five Swiss Cups. And then came a drought that lasted all the way to the new millennium.
Starting in 2000-01 and until the end of the 2016-17 season, Basel won a total of 12 Swiss Super League championships and seven Swiss Cups and has become a permanent participant in European competitions – reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League three times, the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League once and the quarter-finals once. Its dominance is Switzerland was so overwhelming, that in four of those seasons it had won the domestic doubles.
One of Basel’s most successful managers was Christian Gross, who guided the team for ten glorious seasons (1999-2009), in which it won four league championships, four Swiss Cups and had a remarkable run in European competition. In addition, Gross laid the foundation to the club that has won eight league championships in a row. After his reign, no coach has managed the club for more than two seasons.
Massimo Ceccaroni is the all-time appearance leader of Basel, with 398 matches between 1987-2002. His number 2 jersey was retired after the 2001-02 season. Josef Hugi is the all-time goal scorer leader, with 244 goals scored between 1948-1962.
