Hakkında Los Angeles Lakers
There is really one question surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers: How long can LeBron James carry on playing at such a high level? The King, after all, is 38, and has logged in the most amount of minutes in an NBA Career. Ever. Be sure he will be ready to go once the season starts, the how his body would react once the playoff starts is anybody's guess.
Unlike themselves, the Lakers haven't added a third superstar to comply with James and Anthony Davis, but rather have surrounded them with complementary players, other than, perhaps, point guard Austin Reevs who have come on his own and has resigned with the team.
During the off season, the Lakers have: traded guard Russell Westbrook, extended center Anthony Davis' contract, signed guards D'Angelo Russell, Jalen Hood-Schifino and Cam Reddish and forwards Rui Hachimura and Taurean Prince.
Like many franchises, the Lakers have moved around the country. They came into existence in 1947 with the purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL). The new team began playing in Minneapolis, Minnesota, calling themselves the Minneapolis Lakers in honor of the state's nickname, "Land of 10,000 Lakes”. Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joining the rival Basketball Association of America and winning five of the next six BAA and NBA championships in Minneapolis after the NBA formed in 1949. The team was propelled by center George Mikan, who is described by the NBA's official website as the league's "first superstar". Once Mikan retired, the club began to struggle financially and relocated to Los Angeles before the 1960–61 season.
By that time, they already had the superstars, they just couldn’t get themselves a championship ring. Forward Elgin Baylor and guard Jerry West are two of the all-time best, averaging over 30 points per game. The decade also saw the beginning of the rivalry with the Boston Celtics. And the Lakers kept coming short.
In 1968 the Lakers got their man, as dominant center Wilt Chamberlain came to town. It took him and the team five more seasons before they finally got their ring. They won 33 straight games at one point, 69 for the season, and defeated the New York Knicks in the finals.
Baylor, West and Chamberlain retired but the Lakers didn’t wait, trading for another dominant center, this time for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from Milwaukee in a blockbuster deal in 1974. The big man had to wait five more years until the arrival of one, a young man with a big smile named Magic Johnson. This round led to five championships in a nine-year spell, the birth of “showtime”, as the happy go-lucky fastbreak became the team’s trademark, and some epic battles with the Larry Bird-led Celtics.
Another decade, another peak, another time for adjustment. Before 1996, the Lakers traded for the rights of a high school player named Kobe Bryant and then traded for another dominant center, Shaquille O’Neal. This term led to three more championships, before a power struggle between the two superstars led the team to trade O’Neal. Bryant than led the team to two more rings.
