The Miami Dolphins are a professional American football franchise located in the Miami metropolitan area who compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The Dolphins play their home games at New Miami Stadium in the northern suburb of Miami Gardens, and are headquartered in Davie, Florida. A contest was held in 1965 to choose the name of the team, which elicited 19,843 entries and over a thousand different names. The winning name, "Dolphins," was submitted by 622 entrants.
The Dolphins team started to play in the American Football League in 1966, becoming the region’s first professional football team since the days of the Miami Seahawk in 1970 the Dolphins joined the NFL when the AFL–NFL merger occurred.
The team made its first Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl VI, but lost to the Dallas Cowboys 24–3. The following year, the Dolphins completed the NFL's only perfect season culminating in a Super Bowl win, winning all 14 of its regular-season games, both of its NFL playoff games, and also Super Bowl VII. The 1972 Dolphins were the third NFL team to accomplish a perfect regular season. The Dolphins also won Super Bowl VIII, becoming the first team to appear in three consecutive Super Bowls, and the second team (the first AFL/AFC team) to win back-to-back championships. Miami also appeared in Super Bowl XVII and Super Bowl XIX, losing both games.
For most of their early history, the Dolphins were coached by Don Shula, the most successful head coach in professional football history in terms of total games won. Under Shula, the Dolphins posted losing records in only two of his 26 seasons as the head coach. During the period spanning 1983 to the end of 1999, quarterback Dan Marino became one of the most prolific passers in NFL history, breaking numerous league passing records. Marino led the Dolphins to five division titles, 10 playoff appearances, and Super Bowl XIX before retiring following the 1999 season.
Larry Csonka was arguably the Dolphins' best rusher of all time. He spent eight seasons with Miami, and was known for playing through a broken nose and other injuries. His hard-nosed play remains that of legend. Csonka was a five-time Pro Bowler who helped the Dolphins set an NFL record in 1972 with 2,960 rushing yards. He was named Super Bowl VIII MVP.
Zach Thomas achieved the record of Tackles: 1,076 Sacks: 20.5 INTs: 17 A seven-time Pro Bowler, Thomas was one of only three players to record 100 or more tackles in his first 10 NFL seasons. In 2006, he tied for the third-most Pro Bowl appearances in club history and it was the most selections among all defensive players in Dolphins history.
Leadership is key for any winning team, and Nick Buoniconti was that for the Miami Dolphins from 1969-1976. He was the Dolphins' Most Valuable Player three times (1969, 1970, 1973) and recorded a then-team record 162 tackles (91 unassisted) in 1973. The defense he commanded was nicknamed the "No-Name Defense" because of its lack of star players. It played more as a cohesive unit. Twice he made the NFL Pro Bowl, and six times was named an AFL All-Star.
