The New York Islanders are a professional ice-hockey team based in New York City and are a member club of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team plays its home games at the Barclays Center, located in the borough of Brooklyn. The Islanders are one of three NHL franchises in the New York metropolitan area, along with the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers. Most of the Islanders' fans tend to live on Long Island (Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties).
The team was founded in 1972 as part of the NHL's manoeuvres to keep a team from rival league World Hockey Association (WHA) out of the newly built Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. After two years of building up the team's roster, they found almost instant success by securing fourteen straight playoff berths starting with their third season. The Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983, the seventh of eight dynasties recognized by the NHL in its history. Their 19 consecutive playoff series wins between 1980 and 1984 is a feat that remains unparalleled in the history of professional sports.
After the end of the dynasty, the franchise ran into problems with money, ownership and management, an aging arena, and low attendance. Their financial woes were reflected in their gameplay as the team has not won a division title since 1987–88, or a playoff series since 1992–93. After years of failed attempts to rebuild or replace Nassau Coliseum in suburban Long Island, the Islanders relocated to the Barclays Center following the 2014–15 season.
Eight former members of the Islanders have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, seven of whom were members of all four Cup-winning teams. Among the Islanders most distinguished players were:
Denis Porvin retired having scored 310 goals and 742 assists for 1,052 points (at the time, the NHL career leader in all those categories for defensemen) in 1,060 games, adding 1,356 penalty minutes. He was the first NHL defenseman to reach 1,000 career points.
Clark "Jethro" Gillie provided both physical presence and offensive punch for the NHL's New York Islanders during their four-year run as Stanley Cup champions. In a career that spanned 958 games, Gillies notched 319 goals, 378 assists, and 1023 penalty minutes. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.
Bryan Trottier had a string of achievements in his Islanders career. They included most career games (1,123), most career points (1,353) and most career assists (853) He held the record for most points in a season (Islanders) – 134 in 1978–79, surpassed by Mike Bossy (147 in 1981–82) and the most assists in a season 87 in 1978–79.
Michael Bossy was the only player in NHL history to score consecutive Stanley Cup winning goals, in 1982 and 1983, the only player to record four game-winning goals in one series (1983 Conference Final), is the NHL's all-time leader in average goals scored per regular season game, holds the NHL's third highest all-time average points scored per regular season game, and is one of only five players to score 50 goals in 50 games.
