OGC Nice plays its football in the top division of French football, Ligue 1. The club was founded in 1904 and plays its home matches in the Allianz Riviera stadium. Originally playing as the Gymnaste Club de Nice it can boast a farly rare pedigree as the only club that played in the inaugural season of Ligue 1 which is currently also playing in the top rank.
Nice have had their share of footballing honours, having won Ligue 1 four times and the Coupe de France three times. These honours mostly came in the Club’s most successful period, the 1950s, when the title was achieved in the 1951, 1952, 1956, and 1959 seasons. Nice achieved a league and cup double in 1954 and also won the Coupe de France in 1954 and most recently in 1997 when they had a dramatic win over Guingamp 4-3 on penalties.
It was during their decade of greatest success that Nice brought in several international players into their team including Argentinian Héctor Adolfo de Bourgoing, Victor Nurenberg from Luxembourg and Joaquin Vale who holds Nice’s all-time scoring awards and is thought by many to be Nice’s greatest ever player.
Last season Nice finished in mid-table taking the eleventh slot in the Ligue. Nice have shown their ambition to rise up the table by the off-season capture of the former Newcastle United attacker, Hatem Ben Arfa. He will usefully add to the firepower of 2014-15 top scorer Darío Cvitanich.
