Philadelphia 76ers - Dallas Mavericks
Hakkında Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers basketball team (nicknamed the Sixers) are located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. Their foundation dates back to 1946 when they were known as the Syracuse Nationals being based in Syracuse in upstate New York and thus they are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA, and one of the eight (out of 23) who have survived the league's first decade and live to tell the tale.
The 76ers have three NBA championships to their name. The first under the banner of the Syracuse Nationals in 1955 with a second title in the 1966–67 season and the third title came in the 1982–83 season. The 76ers have only featured in one NBA Final once since then: with a defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers by a 4-1 margin.
The effect of financial issues on American sport is the chief explanation for the franchise moving from New York State to Pennsylvania. Syracuse had been the last medium-sized city to support a NBA team and new owners took the team to Philadelphia filling the spot held by the Warriors who had themselves relocated to San Francisco. he franchise then held a contest to name the club and on August 6, 1963, the Nationals changed their name. 500 different suggestions were entered and the 76ers (commonly shortened to “Sixers” in the press) was the adopted name.
The 76ers have had a rich history, with many of the greatest players in NBA history having played for the organization, including:
Wilt Chamberlain was the first NBA player to score more than 30,000 cumulative points over his career, and the first and only player to score 100 points in a single game.
Julius Erving played for the Sixers for the last eleven years of his playing career. Commonly known by the nickname Dr. J, Erving helped popularize a modern style of play that emphasizes leaping and playing above the rim.
Allen Iverson's talent and determination pushed him to be one of the greatest players in 76ers history. He hit his apex in 2001, when he averaged 31.1 points and 2.5 steals per game en route to winning the NBA's MVP award.
Hal Greer spent his entire career with the Sixers, appearing in 10 straight All-Star games from 1961 to '70, averaging 19.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists for his career. During the 1967 title season, he scored 22.1 points to Chamberlain's 24.1.
Finally it was said of Charles Barkley “He plays everything he plays basketball. There is nobody who does what Barkley does. He's a dominant rebounder, a dominant defensive player, a three-point shooter, a dribbler, a playmaker.”
