2023 will mark 40 years since Roger Waters left Pink Floyd, the band he co-founded back in 1965. After embarking on a long and an illustrious solo career, Waters remains one of the most unique, controversial and influential artists. And yes, Pink Floyd material still plays a major and honorable part in his world-wide concerts.
Three years after forming the band, Waters, the bass player, became Pink Floyd's lyric writer, vocalist and leader. During those early years, the band was one of many who flooded London's music scene, although it was unique from the start as a progressive rock band, who emphasized lights and live-show atmosphere no less than the music itself.
The band gained critical acclaimed and the music business started to get notice, but it all exploded in 1973, when Pink Floyd Released its concept album Dark Side of the Moon. The album has since gone 14 times platinum in sales (over 40 million copies) and graced the Billboard charts for no less than an astonishing 736 weeks.
The aftermath of Dark Side of the Moon was an extraordinary decade, in which the band released one mega-hit album after the other: Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979), which later turned into a movie. The wall centered around Waters' own personal experience of growing up without a father in post-World War II Britain, as well as his own personal experiences and criticism of the country's educational system.
Waters last piece of work with Pink Floyd was The Final Cut (1983), after which he quit the band among much dispute and quarrels with the three remaining members.
Waters' post Pink Floyd work has included few studio albums, but it is his live concerts which has turned into an extravaganza. He played The wall – Live in Berlin one year after the fall of the Berlin wall in 1990, in what has become one of the largest-ever live concerts, with an estimated audience of over 400,000 people and millions more TV viewers. 20 years later, he has embarked on a world-wide tour of The Wall, and the tour has become one of the best grossing in music history. Waters also went on a world-wide tour of Dark Side of the Moon, which lasted for almost three years.
